Ph.D. project (2001)

During my Ph.D. project carried out in 2001 at the Aalborg University Esbjerg in Denmark I worked on experimental and computational fluid dynamics in gas-liquid chemical reactors. The first objective of the Ph.D. project is the further development and improvement of computational models in the research of fluid dynamics in gas-liquid chemical reactors, in order to come to a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) basis which is mostly independent of empirical models. The second objective of the project is the further development and improvement of experimental techniques, in such way that all flow properties relevant for CFD validation can be measured.

The results of this research project can be used in the design of chemical reactors in the process industry. Reliable designtools are very important, because they can help in the scale-up of process equipment, thereby simplifying and shortening the period needed for design.

Parts of the project are carried out in close collaboration with other European research groups. The results of the project are presented at conferences and published in scientific journals.

M.Sc. final project at the Chemical Reactor Engineering group, faculty of Chemical Engineering, University of Twente, The Netherlands.
Up to now only one-phase particle image velocimetry (PIV) was possible. My graduation assignment was to develop two-phase PIV. Therefore I developed and validated new software. The developed technique was successfully applied to the dispersed gas-liquid two-phase flow in bubble columns. Information about the local velocity of gasbubbles and liquid was derived from the measurements.

September - November 1997
Traineeship at the process control group of Shell in Moerdijk, the Netherlands.
All heavily polluted wastewater at the site of Shell in Moerdijk is gathered in a pumping station. Because of the strong varying composition of the wastewater, good pH control was difficult to accomplish. I designed a stable, intelligent feed-forward pH controller to achieve this goal. The designed pH controller proved to be a major improvement.

Simulation of the gas-liquid flow in a square Bubble Column. Geometry of 0.15 x 0.15 x 0.45 m (w x d x l) and a central gas inlet with a superficial gas velocity of 0.49 cm/s. The real time gas volume fraction and liquid velocity are displayed during 5 seconds. The animation has a frame rate of 10 Hz. This problem was simulated with the multifluid model in CFX 4.3, using 32 x 32 x 45 gridcells and timesteps of 0.005 s. The drag, lift and virtual-mass forces were taken into account. The turbulence was simulated with a Smagorinsky LES model.

Simulation of the "Becker case". Geometry of 50 x 8 x 150 mm (w x d x l) and a decentral gas inlet with a gas flow rate of 1.6 l/min. The gas volume fraction during 80 seconds is displayed. Each frame corresponds to 1 seconds real time.
This problem was simulated with the multifluid model in CFX 4.2, using 50 x 8 x 150 gridcells and timesteps of 0.01 s. The turbulence was simulated with the k-epsilon model.
